Frequently asked questions

Class etiquette

  • Arrive with time to spare: Find the studio, check in, and be ready to dance with your hip scarf.
  • Silence your phone: You won't need it during class.
  • Pick a good spot: Stand where you can see and hear the instructor.
  • Keep moving: If you get lost, keep moving and counting, and rejoin when you can.
  • Stay open: Everything is challenging at first. Stay positive and open to new ideas.
  • Don't give up: If you're frustrated, try a simpler version or take it at half speed.
  • Wear form-fitting layers: So your instructor can see your muscles work. Bring a layer if you run cold.
  • Pack light: Water, hip scarf, and a smile.
Do I need any dance experience?
No. Many of our students had never danced before their first class. Beginner classes start from the very first step, and your first class is free.
What do I wear to class?
Something comfortable you can move in: stretchy or yoga pants and a fitted top work well, plus a sports bra. Form-fitting clothes let your instructor see your movement and help you. Bring a hip scarf if you have one. Dressing up is fun but never required; Zaira says she can't dance without earrings and lipstick, so there you have it.
What kind of footwear do I need?
Bare feet, socks, ballet practice shoes, or dance shoes. Tennis shoes aren't allowed. Long-term students often invest in ballet slippers; Melbourne Dancewear at 442 N Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, can fit you.
Do I have to register before class?
No. You can sign up online ahead of time or in person; if in person, arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign in with the instructor. Classes are ongoing, with a drop-in rate and class-card discounts.
I missed the start of the session. Is it too late to join?
Not at all. Our class format repeats and we cycle through material often, so you can catch up. For choreography classes, a private lesson can help you learn what you missed.
I've danced before. Which level should I start at?
Drop in to a class and ask the instructor to assess your experience. In general, under a year of continuous classes means starting in Beginner; more than a year, try Advanced Beginner / Intro to Intermediate. Zaira is happy to help place advanced and professional dancers.
How long will I stay in each level?
The goal isn't to race through levels but to enjoy and feel accomplished in every class. Topics rotate, so expect roughly 6 months to 2 years at the beginner levels, and 3 years and up for intermediate through advanced.
Is belly dancing good exercise?
Yes. It's low impact, works your core, posture, and flexibility, and is a wonderful escape from stress. Bring plenty of water; class can be vigorous.
Can I dance with a physical limitation?
Check with your doctor first, as with any new activity, especially with back or joint problems or during pregnancy. Then tell us about any movement restrictions and we'll work with you at the right level. With notice, we have taught blind and deaf participants. Our motto is belly dancing for everyone.
Do students get to perform? Do I have to?
Students at every level can perform in our two annual showcases (haflas), usually in May and early December, and at community events. Performing is never required; if you're here for fitness and fun, that's perfect.
